Neri Tenuta Winery
Maximiliano Neri is a man with generations of winemaking behind him. Hailing from the vineyards of Tuscany, Italy, he has now relocated to Chiang Mai where his own family’s wines can be sampled and enjoyed on the mountainsides of Baan Pong. For now he has two wines on offer, Brunello Montalcino and Nobile Montepolano (both are red, the Nobile being awarded 99 out of 100 in the Wine Spectator rating charts). Neri Tenuta Winery offers a unique wine drinking experience with a glass served with a range of side snacks starting at just 150 baht. Views of the mountains are stunning, perfect for a date or an afternoon city escape with friends. Bottles are chilled in a cooler imported from Italy, keeping the wine at a constant 20 degrees for perfect drinking temperature. Sure, the winery is a bit of a drive out of town, but it is well worth it for the great atmosphere, lovely décor and even better wines.

Hug Wieng Shop
“I’m seasonal. I’m local. I’m organic,” announces Hug Wiang Shop’s new shopping bags. This adorable shoplet nestled in a soilet off Nimmanhaemin brings fresh, seasonal, and of course organic, produce from the organic community network around Chiang Mai to its shelves daily. They also have processed organic products from other provinces in Thailand for sale as well as formalin-free seafood such as fish, squid and prawns, sent up daily by artisanal fisheries down south. A social enterprise under the Chiang Mai Green Beauty and Scented Organisation which works on environmental issues, this is a great shop to pop into for your daily produce. Shelves are stocked with different items each day, depending on the freshest and the season. They also can be found at the pop-up organic market at Meechok each Saturday between 2pm-7pm. Feeling lazy? No worries, they deliver as well, as long as you are in the Nimman/CMU area.

Open 10am – 7pm

somtum house

Somtum House
This som tum destination on Nimmanhaemin Road is about to celebrate its 12th anniversary. Apart from the standard Thai and isaan som tums, owner Rachaneekorn Chirakul is a real innovator and always coming up with intriguing new dishes to serve in her mortar. Everything is guaranteed fresh and sans MSG. So, why not start with tum muang muang, of spicy shredded bamboo shoots served with crunchy pork rind, fermented pork sausage, sour pork, and northern Thai spicy sausage. Their delicious rong jong som tum is served with fresh crab, a nice change for those a bit averse to the strong flavours of pickled crab. All a bit too spicy? Never fear, you can order it to taste, or temper it with a side dish of fried chicken wings in fish sauce or grilled pork with herbs and chilies in Thai dressing. Basically this is a nice elegant restaurant in a great setting with good service serving some of the best flavours Thai street food has to offer.
