Chiang Mai Gears Up for International Rugby 7s Spectacle
Chiangmai International 7s returns this September with expanded youth divisions and global participation
Rugby continues to thrive in Northern Thailand, with the sport enjoying steady growth thanks to competitions like the Chiang Mai 11s and 11s league and the recently launched Northern Thailand XVs league. Now, all eyes are on the return of one of the region’s most exciting sporting events — the Chiangmai International 7s.
Following the undeniable success of its debut last year, the tournament returns to the city on September 20–21, 2025, promising to be even bigger and better. While last year featured only adult competitions in the Men’s and Women’s divisions, this year’s edition introduces an expanded format that includes youth divisions for the first time. Young players will compete in U12 (Mixed), U14 (Boys and Girls), and U16 (Boys and Girls) categories, adding even more energy and enthusiasm to an already electric event.
The Chiangmai International 7s serves a dual purpose: to create meaningful opportunities for local Thai teams to play against international competition, and to raise funds for the Lanna Youth Rugby Program. The program, run in collaboration with local NGOs Bann Dek Foundation and Kids Ark Foundation, supports over 80 young players across the region. Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing team uniforms and funding the upcoming Northern Thailand Youth 7s series, scheduled for November through January.
Matt Hirst, Director of Lanna Rugby Club, expressed his excitement:
“We can’t wait to host so many teams in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support from the rugby community across Asia. A special thanks goes to Jason Bray from Rugby Lovers Guide to Asia, who has been incredibly supportive in promoting the event. And of course, huge gratitude to Yaowarate Sports Club and Resort — I know people will be blown away by the facilities.”
The Chiangmai International 7s is shaping up to be a landmark event on Thailand’s rugby calendar. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or new to the game, mark your calendars — you won’t want to miss it.
