Chiang Mai has, of course, no shortage of spas — we have long been something of a world capital of the massage table — but Charis Spa, which recently opened on Sridonchai Road near the Night Bazaar, is doing something a little different. The name Charis is the Greek word for “grace” — and it wears it well. There is no grand lobby statement, no synthetic fragrance pumped through the vents. What greets visitors instead is the real thing: essential oils, warm timber, Lanna accents, the quiet of a building set nicely back from the busy road and a lush tropical garden wrapped around it all.
A friendship, a farm and a pandemic
The story behind Charis Spa begins not with a business plan but with a moringa farm and a friendship. Sofia Chen, who has spent most of her career in health and beauty, runs the spa with her husband David Chen. She had a long-term friend with a moringa farm, selling essential oils extracted from this remarkable miracle plant under the brand Panya. The product was excellent. It simply needed finding. So Sofia joined forces with her friend and began building an audience — and then Covid arrived, the world moved online, and Panya’s sales rocketed over the pandemic.
The next step was a shop at the Shangri-La Chiang Mai, a space designed less for selling than for listening — getting to know clients and, importantly, helping them find real beauty and health solutions. Free facial skin analysis and treatments. Genuine conversations about what a client’s skin actually needed, and why. Products that delivered on what they promised. The clients came back. They brought friends. And eventually, they started asking whether there was somewhere they could lie down and have all of this done to them properly. Charis Spa, offering a curated variety of products and services, was the ultimate solution — a full destination built on a foundation that had been earning its credibility for over a decade.
Enveloped in five senses
When Sofia set about designing the spa, she found something reassuring: Thai spa culture had already reached such an international standard that it required no reinvention, only thoughtful application — the wheel, as she puts it, had already been invented. What she brought to it was a framework as well as her unique products and services. A great spa, she decided, must address all five senses — not as a marketing idea, but as a design principle.
Sight is the first to register at Charis Spa. The aesthetic is modern Lanna — warm timbers, natural materials, craft details, nature kept genuinely close. Each treatment room is named after an element. The garden surrounds the building; the spa feels grown into it rather than imposed upon it. Elegant and cosy in equal measure, the interiors find that perfect balance between refinement and comfort.
Smell: a signature scent is what truly sets a luxury spa apart. So Sofia developed one. Working with aromatherapy experts and discovering along the way that she had a natural talent for it, she created a suite of signature blends designed not merely to smell pleasant but to function. Blends to ease stress. Blends to lift low mood. Blends for sleeplessness. The process eventually produced Rouge Désir, Éclore and other Charis’s house scents.
Sound is handled with equal care. Music is piped individually into each of the six treatment rooms and clients select their own, matched to mood and need rather than chosen for inoffensiveness.
Taste is attended to from arrival: welcome drinks, moringa tea or herbal teas, each selected for the individual. Clients with diabetes or high blood pressure receive something specific to their needs. Guests note their birth month and are served drinks in keeping with their corresponding elements — a detail that feels personal rather than gimmicky in practice.
Touch — the sense every spa ultimately rises or falls on — comes down to the therapists, sourced from Thailand’s best spas and training schools and supported by professional trainer-therapists who maintain standards in-house. Treatments are tailored individually: beyond the full massage menu, the spa offers targeted programmes for clients with various concerns, including back pain, cellulite and weight management. The welcome, the music, the treatment: all of it adjusts to the person in the room.
The space
Charis Spa offers specialised themed treatment rooms, featuring body and massage beds and foot massage chairs spread across a fully equipped facility. Singles, couples, or even parents with a young child can reserve one of the VVIP rooms for treatments, baths, steam, leisure or other specialised care and services. The sanctuary also includes a dedicated beauty room for hair and beauty treatments. The spa is genuinely peaceful: set away from traffic, enclosed by greenery, and with the unhurried atmosphere that comes from having been designed by someone who actually uses spas.
The wellness centre
Alongside the spa, Charis also operates a wellness centre with a rather different purpose: to help people slow down, step away from their screens and spend time with themselves and the people they love. In an age of relentless connectivity, the centre offers a deliberate counterpoint — a place to simply be present. Mothers can learn how to massage their toddlers; couples can learn to do the same for one another. Regular yoga classes provide another reason to return, while workshops on topics such as herbal knowledge offer something more unexpected — the kind of hands-on learning that turns a visit into an experience, and makes it one the whole family can share.
The products and services
Every product used at Charis Spa is organic and free of synthetic chemicals, from Panya’s moringa oil base to Charis’s essential oil blends: ensuring premium, holistic facial and body treatments for every client.
Panya’s flagship is the Golden Moringa Oil — cold-pressed, extracted using nanotechnology for ultra-fine molecular absorption and infused with 99.99% pure Swiss gold. It is protected by a Thai patent, certified by the Thailand Nanotechnology Centre and has since earned the Outstanding Anti-Ageing Cosmetic Award and, in 2024, the MSME National Award. Around this flagship has grown a considered range, designed to suit every need.
Charis’s Rouge Désir is a masterpiece of purity, featuring a 100% alcohol-free essential oil blend. This undiluted formula provides a rich, potent fragrance that lasts significantly longer and feels more luxurious on the skin. Charis’s clients value its strength so much that they either wear it as a bold standalone scent or use it as a premium base to mix with their own oils to craft a unique, signature aroma that harmonises perfectly with their own body chemistry.
The Digital Detox, one of Charis Spa’s signature packages — five hours, no phone — moves guests through essential oil education, floral arrangement and full treatment, including a facial massage using Frankincense-infused moringa oil. It is a programme, not merely a booking, aimed at those who arrive needing considerably more than an hour or two off.
Charis Spa offers an extensive selection of wellness services, featuring aromatic minerals, luxurious milk and Himalayan pink salt baths; moringa seed, coffee and Rouge Désir scrubs; body mud wraps and firming rituals; and more.
Sofia is one of those rare people who can talk about skincare for five or six hours on live social media and hold an audience throughout — because she genuinely knows her subject, gives honest answers and clearly enjoys the conversation. Her customers know this. They came for the products and services and stayed for the relationship, becoming the loyal, returning clientele that eventually persuaded her to open a spa in the first place. It is, as origin stories go, a rather good one.
Both Panya and Charis products are available at Charis Spa, at the Shangri-La Chiang Mai and through official channels on Facebook, Line, TikTok, Lazada, Shopee and the Charis Spa website. The brand advises purchasing only through these verified outlets due to counterfeit products in circulation:
