In late 2019, Michelin Guide released its guide book for 2020 which included Bangkok, and for the first time ever, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Phang-nga (The Michelin Guide Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket & Phang-Nga 2020).

Although only selected restaurants in Bangkok and Phuket received Michelin stars, Chiang Mai did get a few nods, receiving Michelin plate awards for 33 eateries from street food up to 5 star hotels. These restaurants were carefully screened by the Michelin committee based solely on food without factoring in food price.

137 Pillars House Hotel’s Palette Restaurant was one of the selected venues. Following closely in Michelin’s foot steps, Spoon&Fork had to try the Michelin plate tasting menu carefully crafted by Chef Mam Lakana Suakeaw. We discovered a menu comprising delicious dishes using local organic fresh ingredients which exploded into a diversity of flavours.

Start off with blowtorched tiger prawns and salmon as an appetiser which arrives aromatic with spices and tasty with sweet and sour flavours in a spicy chili vinaigrette. Next move on to the broccoli and green curry veloute which offers smooth tastes of coconut milk gently blended with Thai green curry while the mushroom soup with truffle oil gives diners something mellow and truly magnificent to savour.

Cleanse your palate with a rocket salad with honey lemon sauce with added flavour from quality salt, pepper and olive oil. If you like pasta, then you must try the truffle capelli which comes with generous amounts of parma ham, different types of mushrooms and of course is also enveloped in the scents of truffle oil.

Three main dishes to choose from include: roast chicken breast served with fresh vegetables and sweet pont neuf potatoes; a juicy roast veal angus with a sauce from the roast beef mixed with sweet port wine; or seared tuna with capers and basil leaves, served with carrots and mashed potatoes. End the meal with a heavenly peach pie toppled with vanilla ice cream. The restaurant itself is a charming traditional century-old Thai house tucked in Wat Gate area.
