Som tum must be one of the most ubiquitous dishes in Thailand; each vendor using the basic combinations of raw papaya, fresh tomatoes and chilies, fish sauce, sugar and fish sauce as a base, adding ingredients such as fermented crabs, peanuts, string beans for added interest.

Tum Long Jong  – fresh crab in somtum dressing

But in the elegant white house that is Somtum House by Yokkrok in the trendy Nimmanhaemin area, they have elevated this dish into a creative art form. With a bewildering number of options, you can add or use completely different ingredients to your som tam, from corn to pork rind. They also offer many other unique and interesting dishes well worth checking out. We enjoyed a spicy tum long jong (fresh crabs in som tum dressing), a lip-smacking salmon tod nam pla (deep fried salmon marinated in fish sauce and green mango salad), a honey longan with ginkgo biloba in syrup and a super spicy tom sab kra-duke onn – (herbs and chillies soup with soft pork ribs).

The restaurant is so popular with locals and tourists alike it was recently awarded Certificate of Popularity of the Year 2017 by Chinese tourists. This is a great spot to satiate your yearning for some local food, as well as a perfect destination to take out of town guests.
