The weather is perfect and the tourists are invading – what better way to escape the bustle and enjoy the coolness than high above the city lights, at one of these fabulous rooftop bars?

1. The Upper Deck

This unassuming little old city hideaway on Sriphum, Soi 1 is tough to spot from street level, but once you climb the narrow staircase to the top, you’ll be rewarded with cosy fairy lights, munchies and tonnes of creative cocktails.

3. Sahara

Hunker down under the Bedouin style tent roof with shisha, cocktails and yummy Middle Eastern and Thai food at this spacious and stylish rooftop standby. It’s the perfect vantage point to watch the hustle and bustle of Nimman below (and all the drunken college students stumbling out of Warm Up).

4 THC Rooftop Bar

Across from Tha Pae Gate, you’ll find staircase after staircase leading you up to this creaky-floored, black-lit, neon-painted retreat. Embrace the backpackers, grab a bucket, settle down on a floor cushion and enjoy the hypnotic beats of the in-house DJs.

5. Xanadu Pub & Restaurant

Situated atop the Furama Hotel on Huay Keaw Road, this rooftop oasis will greet you with 360 degree views of the city and Doi Suthep beyond. Dine on traditional Thai cuisine and cocktails while listening to golden oldies and latest pop by the live band. Reservations recommended.

6. CNX Bar

Named for the city’s airport code (and apparently CNX is what the cool kids are calling Chiang Mai these days), this place maintains the perfect mix of retro funkiness and laid-back comfort. Located across from Suan Dok gate within the old city walls, the three-storey space has a photo gallery, food and a full rooftop bar.
