World Tourism Press Conference in Chiang Mai
CityNews – On the 3rd of May at the Le Meridian Hotel, a press conference was held with the 24th Joint Meeting United Nations – The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Commissions for East Asia and the Pacific and UNWTO High-Level Regional Conference on Green Tourism.
Chiang Mai was selected by the representative of the World Tourism Organization as the place to hold the press conference, as it is viewed as a safe place and a hub of Lanna culture and arts which includes a wide variety of green products.
The tourism industry is one of Thailand’s major economic factors and in 2011 it generated 700 million baht. The government has a policy to support tourism with a target that tourism in Thailand should generate two billion baht within a period of five years.
The government has developed a branding strategy for the period to stimulate tourism; the strategy concentrates on security, confidence, image, and the strengths of Thailand in the eyes of tourists. There are also plans to improve connections with neighboring countries and implement transportation to those countries for tourists.
A total of 153 people from 23 countries, including over 100 Thais from the tourism industry, participated in this press conference. Among these people were Chumphon Sinlapa-acha, Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Dr. Taleb Rifai, secretary of UNWTO, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture of Maldives Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Cgafoor, and M.L. Panadda Diskul, governor of Chiang Mai, who cooperated in the opening of the press conference.
