August 15, 2012

CityNews – On 14th August, M.L. Panadda Diskul, the governor of Chiang Mai, was president at a press conference concerning the 10 month long drug protection programme in Chiang Mai.

The governor praised the collaboration of various organisations in Chiang Mai, stating that now drug dealers were not coming through Chiang Mai province and were going to other provinces in Thailand. Now the police were focusing on pubs, clubs and bars in arresting drug dealers.

Wichai Chaimongkol, the head of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board Region 5, said the office had a good relationship with the Thailand’s border countries. Officers from the Narcotics Control Board had been sent to train with Burmese and Laotian officers. Many drugs dealers have been arrested for this reason.

Colonel Chatree Settakorn, the deputy commander of Counter Drugs in Northern Region Boundaries Centre, said drugs had been produced near the border of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Most of the transporters are hill tribes, he said. Recently, many drugs dealers or transporters, have tried to avoid confrontation with Thai police officers, but this is getting increasingly difficult.

Almost 15 million yaba pills, 51 kilograms of heroin and 44 kilograms of ‘ice’ has been seized this year already. Police Colonel Weerawut Niamnoi, the deputy commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police Station, said 6,981 drug dealers have been arrested.
