Two Arrested for Monk and Nun Scam

CityNews – On June 12th Sansai police arrested a man and woman who had been posing as a monk and a nun so they could solicit alms from unsuspecting merit makers.

Phrayard Katathammo and Tippawan Phumee

The impostors, Phrayard Katathammo, 57, and Tippawan Phumee, 38, had reportedly scammed numerous people around Chiang Mai whom in their piety had given the couple alms. Police said that the pair went from motel to motel and had no fixed residence, during the day Phrayard would put on his garb and walk the streets, while Tippawan would work evenings.

After receiving complaints from people who had questioned the integrity of the monk and nun duo, police stationed several officers in the city and kept a look out for the suspects. The pair were eventually spotted at the Arcade Bus Terminal, where they were arrested.

Police confiscated one Toyota pickup truck, 1,000 baht in cash, and several other documents.
