The Sun, the Earth, and Venus to Align
CityNews – The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Public Organisation) and the Ministry of Science and Technology would like residents of Thailand to keep their heads up for an astronomical phenomena called the “Venus Transit” from 5:49 a.m. to 11:49 a.m. on the 6th of June, 2012.
Pimple on the Sun
Scientists say that this phenomenon occurs only twice in 100 years. Those who miss the chance to see this phenomenon will have to wait another 105 years to see it again. It’s thought not many people will be around that long…
Dr. Saran Poshyachinda, deputy director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, revealed that the Venus Transit of 2012 will be well worth watching as the planet Venus will move in a straight line past the Earth and the Sun, and appear as a dot on the sun. The Institute said it will look something like a green bean on a basketball.
The green bean of Venus will take six hours to move from the east to the west side of the sun. You can observe the Venus Transit from all parts of Thailand from sunrise at 5:49 a.m. to 11:49 a.m.
Dr. Saran warns that observers of the Venus Transit must be careful as they will be looking directly at the Sun, which can harm the eyes. Observers should use special equipment such as telescopes with an optical filter or special sun goggles. It is also very dangerous to look at the sun through the lenses of digital cameras and mobile phone cameras, as these camera lenses concentrates light the way a magnifying glass does, which can cause blindness. You might also observe the Venus Transit on the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand website: www.narit.or.th or its Facebook page.
