Sub-District Headmen and Village Heads Unhappy about New Laws that Affect their Term as Leaders

October 2, 2012

CityNews – On 2nd October, 2 p.m. sub-district headmen, village heads, assistant village heads, and assistant sub-district headmen from 25 districts in Chiang Mai protested at Chiang Mai provincial office a new act soon to be drafted stating that their term as leaders shall be no more than 5 years. Previously they held their position until they were 60 years of age.

The general criticism of the new law is that headmen won’t have enough time to help people and the community. They also argue that the new term is a political procedure when they are not involved with politics, rather they are community leaders.

Aphiwat Kadkittipong, the president of the Village Heads Association Chiang Mai, said their letter of complaint must be sent to the prime minister immediately so that they can stop the act. If the government does not heed their complaints, sub-district headmen and village heads from all over Thailand will protest in Bangkok.
