Reducing the Casualties of the Songkran Water War
CityNews – Due to accidents and death rates peaking during public holidays, especially Songkran, Atsathai Rattanadirok na Phuket, deputy director of Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office along with Chanchai Gilapang of Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office, opened a campaign on April 10th to reduce traffic accidents by a massive 50% during Songkran from 2011-2012 based on new policies developed by the Ministry of Transport.
Part of this policy is to service cars which will include checks on car engines used for public transportation. Another part of the policy is strict regulations on the consumption of alcohol. The motto of the policy is ‘alcohol levels must be zero’ before driving out of any station in Thailand. While also to reduce alcohol-related traffic accidents public transportation will be made more widely available all over Thailand during Songkran so people won’t have to drive.
