New Flag to Celebrate Buddhism

CityNews – The Sangha Supreme Council announced that a new flag will be used for the 2600th year Sambuddha Jayanthi celebration, the anniversary of the Buddha’s enlightenment.

Rittipong Techapan, the Chiang Mai Deputy Governor, said that the Sangha Supreme Council agreed to the design of the Sambuddha Jayanthi Celebration flag, which was proposed by Office of National Buddhism and Chulalongkorn University. The flag will be used to decorate government buildings and temples.

The peepul leaf (Bodhi leaf) on the flag is symbolic of the enlightenment of the Buddha. The green color of the leaf means the growth of Buddhism. The wheel in the middle refers to the Buddha’s teaching. The Thai pattern on the leaf signifies the Kingdom of Thailand which has prospered because of the Buddha’s teaching.

Rittipong invited everyone to join the celebration of 2600th year of Sambuddha Jayanthi between 29th May – 4th June 2012 by going to the temple and making merit. There will be a procession on 3rd June 2012 at 7:00 p.m. from Chiang Mai Buddhist Place (Buddhasathan) to Phra Singh Temple and then on to Phan On temple.

At Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep on June 3rd, there will be ritual activities at 7 p.m. while on 4th June  at 7:00 p.m., there will ritual activities for Visakabucha Day (wian tien – ceremonial walk around the temple) at 4 temples in Chiang Mai: Phra Singh Temple, Srisoda Temple, Phrathat Doi Suthep temple, and Chedi Luang Varavihara temple.
