Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in Chiang Mai Making Sure Her Millions of Baht Flood Prevention Measures are in Order

CityNews – On 14^th June 2012, PM Yingluck Shinawatra was in Chiang Mai to track the progress of flood prevention initiatives, her first stop to ten other provinces in the north of Thailand.

Panadda Diskul, the Governor of Chiang Mai relayed to the PM that Chiang Mai has been affected by at least three storms in the past year that caused severe flooding. In certain areas like mountain slopes, flash floods and landslides have occurred, causing damage and even loss of life.

The flood protection plan included dredging of the Ping River from San Patong to Mae Taeng, a distance of 111 kilometres, costing about 408,307,500 baht; the dredging of the river from Doi Saket to Lamphun, a distance of 61 kilometres, costing 126,270,000 baht; a landslide prevention project in 22 districts holding 243 villages, costing 12,150,000 baht; and a surveillance programme to tackle the flood situation in 25 districts of Chiang Mai, costing 28,585,000 baht.

In addition, the width of the Ping River will be extended to 90 metres, and its depth will be extended by 2 metres, costing a total of 129 million baht. The Chiang Mai Municipality has three more projects: improving the construction of the Mengrai Bridge (50 million baht), the construction of drains and pipes to lower the high levels of Ping River water (1.5 million baht), and the construction of a reservoir along with water pipes on Mahidol Road. Projects on the Mae Kha Canal have a total budget of 56.5 million baht. There will also be construction work on road pipes on Highways 9, 107, and 121, costing a total of 20 million baht. The building of a dam floodgate in Thawangtan has a budget of 19 million baht. The total budget is supported by the Thai government.
