Local MP Disqualified After Investigation by NACC
CityNews – On April 19th, the Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions in the Supreme Court came to a unanimous decision to disqualify Chinnicha Wongsawat, the daughter of former MP Somchai Wongsawat, and niece of Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra.
The NACC filed the suit against Chinnicha after having examined her assets and debt statements after taking a position as a Chiang Mai MP on January 22, 2011. It was found that Chinnicha had not filed the debt statement of her 100 million baht loan from Bannapot Damapong. The disqualified MP argued that she had requested the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) to withdraw the sequestration after she had amended her statement. Even though, she filed an additional statement concerning the 100 million baht loan to NACC, it was already eight months late after taking the MP position. She claimed that she had not filed the debt statement because of a misunderstanding with the AEC’s investigation process that had not finished during the period of filing her statements. tentionally filing false assets and debt statements, compiling statements that were false and had the intention to conceal facts that should have been reported to The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), concerning a 100 million baht loan from Bannapot Damapong, one of Thaksin’s in-laws.
The NACC found Chinnicha’s argument to be invalid and therefore she was disqualified. She is now banned her from holding any political positions for five years under the Organic Act on Counter Corruption B.E. 2542 (1999). Section 119.
