Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Outbreak in Thailand – 480 Cases Reported in Chiang Mai
CityNews – As of July 18th, 480 cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease have been reported in Chiang Mai following an outbreak of the disease in the country. The health department of Chiang Mai is on alert to prevent new cases of the disease, and doctors from the Chiang Mai Health Department have visited kindergarten and schools to distribute cleaning fluids.
The Bureau of Epidemiology reported that cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease have also been reported in Bangkok, but that the outbreak was not overly severe. According to the Bureau, the months from July and August are typically times in which outbreaks of the disease is common. There are currently 13,918 reported cases in Thailand, with children under the age of five being the most afflicted. The central region reported the most cases, with 4,354 cases, followed by the northern region with 3,523, the south with 2,556, and the northeast with 2,418. On average, 80-100 new cases of the disease were found in the month of June. While the infection rate seems to have slowed in some areas, more densely populated cities continue to be at risk.
