‘Green Junk Shop 2012’ Campaign Starts in Chiang Mai
CityNews – 35 junk shops took part in The Pollution Control Department’s ‘Green Junk Shop 2012’ campaign in Chiang Mai.
Each participating junk shop (selling anything recyclable including bottles, wood, paper) had to hold a junk shop license in order to take part. The campaign evaluated the junk shops and awarded a cup and 5,000 baht cash for those with ‘excellent quality’, a cup and 3,000 baht cash for those with ‘good quality’, and a certificate for those with ‘moderate quality’.
Of the participating junk shops in Chiang Mai, five were awarded ‘excellent quality’, five were awarded ‘good quality’ and five were awarded ‘moderate quality’, while a further twenty junk shops were told they needed to improve.
According to the director of Domestic Waste Minimisation & Utilisation, the aim of the project was to improve the overall quality junk shops in Chiang Mai and their impact the environment and local people.
The project has run in 12 provinces nationwide with 3,827 shops taking part overall.
