The mayor told the press that the canal is an important body of water as it serves as a drain to excess rain water that the city experiences during the wet season. At the moment the municipality team are fixing the drainage system at the Sri Don Chai Bridge and working on clearing 11 kilometres of canal, first by dredging, and also by removing the water hyacinth from the canal.
“The Mae Kha Canal is a very important,” said the mayor concerning the prevention of floods, “recently, we have started dredging the Ping River, too. If the Ping River is broadened, the water in the Mae Kha will flow faster. And if Mae Kha Canal is also broadened there should be no overflow and the flood problem should not be as bad. We need to drain the excess rain water as fast as possible, and also use pumps to help drain the water,” said Tassanai.
