Conference in Chiang Mai on Human Rights in Myanmar

CityNews – The United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), which consists of 12 ethnic groups in Myanmar, met for the third time at Win Place Hotel, Chiang Mai, on April 19th. 

30 representatives from 10 of the ethnic groups were joined at the conference and were presided over by Col. Meng Rai of the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP). Also attending were representatives of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), Karen National Union (KNU), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), Lahu Democratic Union (LDU), New Mon State Party (NMSP), Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF), Pa-Oh National Liberation Organization (PNLO), Shan State Progress Party (SSPP), and Wa National Organization (WNO). The object of the conference was to find solutions to the ongoing problems ethnic people in Myanmar face such as lack of security, food, healthcare and education. Also discussed were the many abuses ethnic people face, including the killing of their people by the Burmese military. It was agreed that a process of improvement would take around three years between the council and Myanmar government, in time for the ASEAN integration in 2015.
