Chiang Mai to Boost Campaign against Child Sex Tourism
CityNews – On 25th September, at 9 a.m. Ritthipong Techapan, the deputy governor of Chiang Mai was the president of a seminar called the ‘Sex Tourism and Children Prevention Network Development Project’ (rough translation) hosted by the World Vision Foundation of Thailand. The seminar was attended by over 100 business owners in the tourism industry in Chiang Mai.

The purpose of the seminar aimed to create consciousness and understand that the problem of sex tourism concerning minors.
Ritthipong revealed that the tourism industry has increasingly grown over the last few decades and has become essential to the people of Thailand. In Chiang Mai alone he said that there are about five million tourists each year creating about 40 billion baht in revenue. The number is expected to increase after the opening of AEC in 2015. He then said that a problem Chiang Mai faces is also an increase in sex tourism and the exploitation of children, some who are trafficked, and some who are easy to exploit as they already have problems such as addiction.
