Cambodian Pickpocket Gang Operating on Saturday and Sunday Walking Street Nabbed
CityNews – Chiang Mai investigative police have arrested a gang of Cambodian pickpockets who have been targeting tourists on the Saturday and Sunday Walking Streets. Most of the 28 items confiscated were expensive mobile telephones.
A kind of Fagin situation?
Colonel Aksorn Wongsyai of the municipality police, along with his investigative team held a press conference with the 5 persons arrested; Sam Oeun Srey, 53, Soksreyneang Riem, 25, Phala Ing, 19, Ponlok Rong, 17 and Chantradane Uy, 15.
The police were first alerted in the beginning of August that many tourists were being targeted along the Saturday Wua Lai Walking Street and the Rachadamnoen Sunday Walking Street. This gang is believed to have rented an apartment and have been operating here as a team, whenever they were in trouble, they used to run to Bangkok, but have now returned.
On 19th August it was reported that a group of suspicious looking Cambodians were staying at the Chiang Mai Travel Lodge. The police went to inspect the room and found 13 mobile phones, many wallets and purses, credit cards, foreign bank notes and Thai baht.
The suspects admitted to their crimes and said that they had also pick pocketed at Airport Plaza. Five other suspects escaped prior to the arrest and are belied to be in Bangkok.
