Boonlert Wins Election – The Reds Go Marching On
CityNews – Boonlert Buranupakorn of the Phue Thau Khunnatham Party has won the Chiang Mai Provincial Elections.
Boonlert way out in front
The election covered 25 districts in Chiang Mai and 42 regions. There were 4 candidates for president of the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation and 129 candidates for the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation Council.
The results, which were showed in ‘Real Time’ reports via the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation’s website showed that Boonlert received 400,584 votes, Thaworn Kiatchaiyakorn from the Phue Thai Chiang Mai Party received 148,613 votes, Kwanchai Sakulthong, an independent candidate, received 41,983 votes, and Kingkarn Na Chiang Mai from the Khon Chiang Mai Party received 95,368 votes.
70% of voters from a possible 1.2 million turned out, with 61,663 no votes. Many of the voters told the media that they were confused about the candidates and the parties, though they still turned up to vote because they were afraid of losing their rights. According to Thai law if you do not vote in elections it is not possible to work for the government, become a teacher, or take other positions in civil society.
