200 Villagers from Maetuen and Mon Chong Sub-districts, Omkoi District, Ask For New 26th District of Chiang Mai

CityNews – On 4th September, 9.30 a.m., over 200 villagers from Maetuen sub-district and Mong Chong sub-district in Omkoi district, led by Chonnatee Anurakkasikorn, the president of Mon Jong Sub-District Administrative Office, headed to the Chiang Mai Provincial Office to present a letter to the Chiang Mai Governor about setting up a new district in Chiang Mai Province called ‘Nantaburi’, to make life easier for villagers. 

Chonnatee said these two sub-districts are located about 290 kilometres from Chiang Mai and 76 kilometres from Omkoi District Office. On the way to these sub-districts, people have great difficulty travelling through high roads with jungle at each side. Many parts of these sub-districts are not developed, say the villagers.  Many of the roads are full of holes and it hasn’t been repaired for over 20 years, while in the rainy season it is almost impossible to drive on the road. They also said that if there is an accident on the roads it’s so far from hospital that people die on the way to get treatment. In case of the emergency, patients have to wait for a long time to arrive the hospital and some people die on the way to hospital.

Chonnatee said that, “Villagers need to travel. Sometimes they leave the village at midnight and arrive here in the morning. Can you imagine how far that is, especially travelling in the rain on a muddy road?”

A new district would mean more funds for this area, better roads, and less hardship for villagers.

The Chiang Mai Governor received the letter from the villagers and said he would certainly support road and bridge reconstruction. As for a new district, he said something like this would have to be examined. He said he would contact the Department of Provincial Administration and Ministry of Interior for assistance in this case.
