Group Petitions Governor Regarding Parking Fees

July 23, 2012

CityNews– On July 23rd at 11 a.m., Dr. Chomchaun Boonrahong, director of the Institute for Sustainable Community Agriculture, presented a petition to M.L. Panadda Dissakul, the governor of Chiang Mai expressing outrage over parking fees at Chiang Mai international Airport. 23 people signed the petition, among them faculty at both Chiang Mai University and Payap University along with members of The Office of Consumer Protection.

Recently the parking fee at the airport was increased to 200 baht per day, doubling what it had previously been. The reasoning from the airport has been that there are a limited number of spaces and they are responding to pressure to reduce the number of cars. Petitioners disagree with this and claim that the policy hurts consumers while unfairly benefiting government and corporate employees who are reimbursed for their parking fees.

Dr. Boonrahong complained that not only did the price recently jumped to 200 baht from 100, but that previously it had been 50 baht. He asked the governor in the petition to invite the related organizations together for a meeting to discuss the issue and hopefully come to a resolution. The governor agreed to this request and some point in the near future this conference should be held.
