Chiang Mai Encourages Energy Conservation through the 60+ Earth Hours Project
The Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation in cooperation with WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) Thailand, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and Central Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Centre, held an event called ‘60+ Earth Hours Chiang Mai 2012’ on the 31st of March, 2012 in front of Central Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Centre from 8 – 9 p.m.
People and businesses were asked to save electricity any way they could during a 60+ hour period in March, even it meant turning off one light for one hour. The manager of the Provincial Electricity Authority reported that after the 60 hours were up 15.3 megawatts had been saved, and the emission of greenhouse gases had been reduced by 8,369.10 kilograms.
There were more than 18,000 participants in ‘Earth Hour 2011’ from 5,200 cities and 135 countries from all continents making this project a hugely important environmental campaign.
