Chiang Mai City to become a MICE Centre

CityNews – The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organisation) will support the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) industry by hosting a ‘Meeting Industry Day’ soon and by also supporting ‘Year of MICE 2013’.

Thongchai Srimada, who is on the committee of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau revealed that the bureau has been trying to push Chiang Mai towards becoming a MICE city since 2011. Many MICE activities have so far been hosted in Chiang Mai. According to a 2011 survey, the total value of the MICE industry in Chiang Mai is about 3,355.9 million baht, which consists of 427 MICE activities with 59,979 participants from Thailand and abroad.

It will be the first time the Meeting Industry Day is hosted in Chiang Mai, and it is expected that 80 business owners will attend. Another reason for the meeting is for business owners to make a plan for MICE activities in the near future and to prepare MICE development strategies.

Witchaya Sunthornsarntoon, acting manager of the Convention Industry of Thailand, Convention and Exhibition Bureau, said the new convention centre in Chiang Mai has been certified by The Global Association of Exhibition Industries –UFI to host The Trade Fair Industry of Asia 8th Edition 2012. This convention centre is one out of nine international standard convention centres in Thailand.
