Tree planting in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

As has been well documented, hundreds of rai of forest was destroyed in forest fires during the 2020 dry season in Chiang Mai province. Staff of the National Park risked their lives to minimize damage and to prevent further fires but despite this substantial damage occurred. This led to air pollution across the upper North being labelled as “critical” in many areas, including some of the main population centers and caused extensive loss to wildlife populations. Tree cover is essential for many reasons including providing a habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestration, water retention as well as providing an environment for people to enjoy nature and activities such as hiking and cycling.
Objectives
Thai Eco Solutions with the cooperation of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, will embark on a tree planting initiative on July 12th 2020 to help undo some of the damage caused from the burning and restore the natural eco-system. Villagers residing inside the park, students, individuals as well as local partners will also participate in the project and spend the day planting saplings close to the summit of Doi Pui in an area called ‘Doi Hua Moo’ (Pig Head Mountain) which is popular among trail runners and hikers and an area with unique flora and fauna. As well as planting trees, the event is a great opportunity for team building, enjoying the natural environment and meeting new friends!
