Sacred Objects, Sacred Tattoos, and Spiritual Practices in Thai Buddhism: An Anthropological Perspective

Discover the fascinating world of sacred objects, sacred tattoos, and spiritual practices in Thai Buddhism through an engaging lecture that explores the intersection of religion, culture, and everyday life.

This presentation examines the historical background, meanings, functions, and evolving roles of amulets, sacred tattoos, and other religious objects that have long been embedded in Thai Buddhist culture. Participants will gain insight into how these practices continue to shape personal beliefs, social relationships, and spiritual experiences in contemporary Thailand.

The lecture also explores the ways Buddhism, Animism, and elements of Hinduism have blended together over time, creating the rich and distinctive religious landscape found throughout Thai society.

The session will be presented by Ajarn Nong (Amnuaypond Kidpromma, PhD), Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Chiang Mai University. His research focuses on vernacular Hinduism and popular Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia, with particular interest in lived religious practices and local belief systems.

Join this thought-provoking discussion and gain a deeper understanding of the spiritual traditions and cultural heritage that continue to influence Thai society today.
