SKAL Orphanage Support & Local Tourism Study in Chiang Dao

July 21

SKAL community orphanage support & Local tourism development study in Chiang Dao.
On 20 July 2024, we had a great time helping out Baan Mae Mae School in Chiang Dao by donating a large food chilling storage unit, kitchen ware, books, and food supplies for more than 160 orphanage children. We were able to learn more about the inner workings of this government boarding school to support orphanage children who are mostly immigrants from the border, various hilltribes and children whose parents are in prison because of drugs or human trafficking issues. SKAL International Chiang Mai has a long relationship supporting the school for over 13 years and will continue to support the school sustainably. During lunch and in the afternoon, our members enjoyed a tea-full experience at Rai Cha Phutawan (Phutawan Tea Plantation), a local tea plantation in Baan Mae Mae village. This village consists of more than 200 Rai of local Assam tea trees growing in the forest where they produce fresh tea leaves for major tea companies along with producing their own local product “Baan Mae Mae Tea”. After enjoying their tasty signature dishes of “Tea leaf spicy salad and Tea leaf omelet”, we were able to learn about Baan Mae Mae village from Khun Kanlaya Kongsatan, the village leader who shared with us stories of the local tourism development situation. Khun Theeravat Suama, founder of Komenoki Nature Farm in Chiang Dao, introduced us to his local tea blending workshop where we were able to learn about Baan Mae Mae’s organic tea and each material for blending tea. His work with Baan Mae Mae village and Mae Fa Luang Foundation has created opportunities for tea product development for the village.
