Serene Strokes Blends Art from Four Nations in a Creative Journey for Well-Being
A celebration of art as a pathway to healing and cultural connection unfolded at Makok Art Space with the launch of “Serene Strokes: 4 Countries Art Journey for Well-being.” The event brought together artists, diplomats, medical professionals, and creatives from Thailand, China, India, and Bangladesh in a shared exploration of artistic expression and mental wellness.
The initiative was led by Associate Professor Udom Chimphakdee of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, on behalf of Makok Art Space, in collaboration with Aesthetic Art Center (an MS Institution in IWS Globe Art), the Consulate of India in Chiang Mai, Northern News Agency, and Saraphi Bovorn Hospital.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Pranop Kanes, Consul of India in Chiang Mai, underscoring the project’s mission to strengthen cultural ties among the four nations through art. The program highlighted how creative processes can nurture mental health and holistic well-being, while fostering regional artistic cooperation.
A panel discussion titled “Art for the Soul: Conversations on Happiness with Doctors and Artists” featured Associate Professor Udom Chimphakdee; Dr. Samit Samphanthaphong, Director of Saraphi Hospital; renowned Thai watercolor artist Lafe Sraddha Homsawat; Mr. Phichitchai Klerddu of the Chiang Mai Provincial Cultural Council; and was moderated by Ajarn Wipawee Panjinda. The dialogue explored the therapeutic dimensions of art and its role in cultivating emotional resilience.
Participants also joined a hands-on “Well-Being Drawing” workshop led by Associate Professor Udom, encouraging attendees to experience mindfulness through creative practice.
Another highlight was the exhibition “When Those Behind the Scenes Become Artists in the Spotlight,” featuring 13 artistic photography works by two journalists and two bloggers: Natee Boonmee (Northern News page), Jiraphan Tankul (Roi Ruang Muang Lanna page), Panisara Naruepracha (Aew Dee Review), and Mariam Boonmaleerat (Lovedad Studio). The exhibition runs through March 30 at Makok Art Space.
A centerpiece of the event was a live watercolor demonstration of a single rose by Lafe Sraddha Homsawat, internationally recognized as “The One Rose, Traveling the World.” As the only Thai artist affiliated with the global International Watercolor Masters (IWM), Lafe is acclaimed for her innovative watercolor techniques and signature minimalist yet powerful style. Drawing inspiration from nature, she believes that even a single rose can evoke profound joy. Her works have earned international recognition and she remains dedicated to elevating Thai watercolor artists onto the global stage.
Associate Professor Udom Chimphakdee remarked, “In a world that moves at relentless speed, art is not merely a medium of communication, but a pathway to healing and mental well-being. ‘Serene Strokes’ seeks to weave together Asia’s deep artistic roots — from the serenity of Thai Buddhist art and the philosophical brushstrokes of China, to the vibrant colors of India and the refined craftsmanship of Bangladesh. This collaboration aims not only to strengthen diplomatic ties, but also to promote mental wellness among citizens across the region.”
Through the language of art, Serene Strokes affirms that creativity transcends borders — offering both cultural dialogue and a gentle space for the soul to heal.
