In late 2019, American musician and composer Dan Elbert found himself imagining how music would sound if the choices on when and how to play were defined not by musicians or a score, but by the audience. Six years later, “Old and New Dreams” is his first realization of this concept. Using an array of overhead cameras, the installation tracks the motion of people in a room, assigning and modulating melodies as you move. Walk fast, and your part gets louder. Group together, and harmonies form. Visit with a few friends, and it’s a quartet; with a group, and it’s an orchestra. Opening February 28th, on view through March 22nd at Haan Studio in Sanpakoi.
