Opening of Ancient Market, Legend of Old Baa at Old Chiangmai Cultural Center
The Ancient Market, Legend of Old Baa will be at Old Chiangmai Cultural Center 21 – 22 November 2025. This will be continued at Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan from 6 – 7 December 2025.
Highlights include:
1. An ancient market-style market, simulating the traditional city lifestyle, showcasing local products such as local food, Lanna clothing, antique silverware, and woven goods from over 38 vendors; 3. Demonstration activities; and 2. Workshops. Participants are required to exchange Chiang Rai (Chiang Rai) for goods, also known as:
“Kad Laek Chiang”
2. Demonstrations of ancient wisdom, such as the “Kom-Kham” (sword-like device) used by cattle traders for self-defense; demonstrations of the making of “Khao Ram Fuen” (rice stalks) from Shan State to Lanna; and “Sappa Chapa Kua” (sacred wood), an important tool for trade.
3. Workshops, including pottery making, silverware making, and silverware patterning.
4. Cultural performances and local music bands.
Additional fun activities include inviting participants to dress in traditional traditional costumes.

Under the Soft Power Project to Develop High-Value Tourism in the Upper Northern Provinces
The Upper Northern Provinces Group 1, comprising Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, and Mae Hong Son provinces, is a province with tourism potential as a major tourism hub in the North. It boasts Lanna traditions, arts, culture, and wisdom, with a unique and valuable identity and charm that are linked to the history and culture of the Lanna group, with whom people have long-standing ties. Leveraging the existing social and cultural capital in each region to create value and increase economic value, promoting cultural tourism and community-based tourism, this will generate sustainable income for local people. It is also a way to promote Lanna identity, fostering the conservation, restoration, and continuation of cultural heritage for continued preservation. It is imperative that all parties and sectors cooperate in adopting approaches to foster well-being for the people. This initiative aims to bring cultural heritage, Thai wisdom, and local wisdom into practice by adding value to Lanna cultural tourism and community-based tourism, fostering quality and creativity in the value and distinctiveness of Lanna culture in a sustainable manner.
