Inaugural Lanna Cubs Rugby Youth Tournament

January 20

Varee Chiangmai International School successfully hosted the inaugural Lanna Cub’s Cup in conjunction with Lanna Rugby Club. Rugby is a growing sport in Northern Thailand boosted by the new Dimbulla Estate Chiangmai 11s and the Chiang Mai International 11s. Lanna Rugby Club, which recently celebrated its 5 th year anniversary, wanted to celebrate the sport that they love by delivering a fully subsidized invitational tournament to the youngpeople of Thailand. In all, over 160 kids were in attendance from the across Northern Thailand.
In the boy category, there were 5 teams including Doi Tao Rugby Club, Lanna Rugby Club, Prince Royal College, Rajpracha 30 and Rajpracha 60. The group stages were fiercely contested with the Rajpracha 30 and Rajpracha 60 winning all their games until the last game of the day, In the end Rajpracha 60 were worthy winners, winning 20-5 in a physically dominant performance. The final standing was Rajpracha 60 in first place, Rajpracha 30 in second place, Lanna Cubs in third place, Prince Royal College in fourth place and Doi Tao Rugby Club in Fifth place.
In the girl’s category, there were 3 teams Lanna Cubs, Rajpracha 22 and Rajpracha 30. In similar fashion, this group also came down to the last game. Rajpracha 22, from Pai, and Lanna Cubs played a fast-paced game and with great handling skills ensuring that the game was enjoyable to watch. A couple of unforces errors from kick receiving gave Rajpracha the upper hand which saw them as the girl’s category winners. The final standings were Rajpracha 22 in first place, Lanna Cubs in second place and Rajpracha 30 in third place.
To finish the day, local rivals Chiangmai All Stars played hosts Lanna Rugby Club in a 15 a side match. This was well attended with the impressive Chiangmai Allstars turning up with 30 players on their roster, looking to avenge their defeat in the Chiangmai International 11s. They did so in impressive fashion helped by a phenomenal performance by their number 8 who gave their go forward ball numerous occasions.
A huge thanks to all the helpers from Lanna Rugby Club for organising the event and to Varee Chiangmai International for host. We’re already excited for next year.
