CityNews – Students oppose the Highway Department’s order to demolish the fountain court at MAYA mall.

The 4th July announcement by the Highway Department of the demolition of the Maya fountain court has prompted students from Chiang Mai University, Payap University, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and Maejo University to unite to show their opposition to the plan.

Gathering in front of the fountain on the 10th July, the students performed a play, sang songs and skateboarded to highlight the space as a recreational area that can be used by all.

Scheduled for demolition on the 20th July, many doubt the positive effect on traffic congestion at one of Chiang Mai’s busiest junctions. The students are asking for a public hearing to propose an alternative plan that focusses on the public benefit of the space.

Further demonstrations are planned on the 12th, 14th and 18th July.
