Put out your fags –World No Tobacco comes to Chiang Mai

CityNews – Chiang Mai Public Health Office will put on a big event for World No Tobacco Day on 31st May at Ta Pae Gate from 7 a.m. onwards.

The opening ceremony will start at 8.30 a.m. opened by the governor Thanin Supasaen, followed by anti-smoking performances from local students. A parade will then move through Chiang Mai city from Tapae Gate – Buddha Satan – Chiang Mai Gate – Chang Puek Gate and Suan Dok Gate. Stickers will given out to places on the way such as restaurants, pubs, bas, markets, government offices and more.

Chiang Mai Public Health Officer also reports on the latest smoking statistics in time for World No Tobacco Day.

50,710 Thai people died from smoking, or 5.7 people per hour in 2013.

Smoking related diseases include: pulmonary emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, strokes and other cancers.

In Chiang Mai 2.2% smokers are aged 15 – 18 years-old.

They also reported on the places where people are most likely to smoke and where cigarette butts are most often found:

30.86% n government officers, 11.90% in schools, 13.78% in universities, 43.66 in religious venues, 57.95% in restaurants, 44.43% in public transport stations, and 75.31 in markets.
