CityNews – On Tuesday 10th September 2013, Rittipong Techapun, Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai was chairman at a meeting explaining the new project concerning the plan for the management and development of water resources.

Many trees are visible this year at Mae Gnat Dam that are usually under water

This project is currently assigned to the Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, with Prof. Choochock Aryupong as the leader of the project.

The plan is intended to lesson problems from floods and droughts.

It was discussed that the water levels in Chiang Mai are too low for this time of year. The water at Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam is at just 125 million cubic metres, or 47% of the gross storage. Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam is 69 million cubic metres, or 26% of the gross storage.

The Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai expressed concern at the water situation this year. He said all the sectors must work together, especially in the dry season, to conserve water. We should be mindful of crops that use water such as rice, he added. He also said that due to growth encroachment on rivers is also a problem.
