A man had previously been accused of stealing an Isuzu pickup truck and following CCTV footage police were able to identify him as Kitiwut Potawee. An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police heard on Friday that Kitiwut was seen in front of Chang Klan’s Paradise Hotel and attempted to catch him. Kitiwut, however, saw the police coming and fled the scene, eventually brandishing a knife and attacking a police officer who was in pursuit.

The officer had minor injuries on his arm and shot the man once in the right hip.

Police say that the sub-district chief of Song Kaew in Doi Lor district had come into Chiang Mai to purchase Yakult to take home to sell and had left his car running as he went to get money from an ATM machine when Kitiwut stole his car.

Both the injured police and Manit are to recover fully,
