Phase 1 of the San Klang interchange is now 91.6% complete, while Phase 2 has reached 9.7%. Full opening is expected in 2028, with the project designed to ease congestion and improve road safety on the ring road.
The delegation held a follow-up meeting at the Highway District 1 office, where the Department of Highways reported that 11 road improvement projects are currently under way in the province, with a further 9 in the pipeline. Active works include interchanges at San Klang, Ton Pao Phatthana, the Superhighway junction, Kong Sai and Samoeng, while the Likhit Cheewan and San Khayom intersections are in the contractor procurement stage. An efficiency improvement project for the Highway 121 stretch between Don Kaeo and Mueang Kung is also under way.
Other agencies presented their progress: the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning outlined its broader Chiang Mai transport masterplan, while the State Railway of Thailand updated the group on the Den Chai–Chiang Rai–Chiang Khong rail line, intended to link northern Thailand with neighbouring countries.
The deputy minister urged all agencies to keep projects on schedule while raising safety and service standards, and stressed the importance of seamless public transport connectivity to support the region’s economic and tourism growth.
