A new café on Sriphum Road, inside the old city moat, is doing something no other café we have heard of appears to be doing: combining specialty coffee with vipassana meditation practice.
HUTO Meditation Café looks unremarkable from the outside, but inside the minimalist, Zen-inflected space — stocked with psychology and philosophy books — a second-floor “contemplation room” offers customers a place to sit, breathe and meditate alongside their coffee. The café welcomes people of all nationalities and faiths, with owner Nattaphon Khruakanok positioning it as an accessible alternative for those who want to explore meditation outside a temple setting.
Nattaphon, 38, holds a master’s degree in vipassana meditation and has introduced EEG headbands to the practice — biofeedback devices that measure brainwave activity in real time, making the depth of a meditation session visible and quantifiable. The café also hosts courses and aims to connect experienced practitioners with beginners.
On the menu alongside the coffee is khao mathuphayat — rice cooked in fresh milk and honey, a traditional Buddhist ceremonial dish and the café’s signature food offering.
