CityNews – Thermometers hit a shocking -5 degrees Celcius this morning, December 21st, 2017, according to the weather station attached to the Thai National Observatory on Doi Inthanon.

People have reported seeing ice sheets on the nearby rivers, and heavy frost in the area.

According to a 2010 report from the Thai Meteorological Department, which was revised in 2016, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Thailand was a reading of -1.4 degrees Celsius in Sakhon Nakhon on 2 Jan 1974. If today’s reading of -5 degrees is authenticated it would steal first place as the coldest temperature ever recorded in modern Thai history.

The peak of Doi Inthanon recorded a temperature of -2 degrees Celsius and Kew Pae Pan recorded a temperature of 1 degree Celsius this morning.
