Police unveil new welcoming mascot for high season

General Sukhun Prommayon, Commissioner of Tourist Police Bureau, visited Chiang Mai today to unveil the new tourist police mascot of a giant holding up a heart sign. The new mascot, he said, is aimed at changing perceptions about Thai tourist police from a force to fear to one to seek aid and help from. The public should not fear the police, he said, but instead see them as gentle giants helping out. 

General Sukhun told CityNews at a press conference held at the Tourist Police headquarters, that he had talked to many people representing the travel industry and 

The general went on to say that the tourist police are currently building a command centre to centralize all data and communication. The application, Tourist Police i lert u, will be available for download and will be a direct connection to the command centre for any needs or emergencies. 

He also said that tourist police will begin patrolling busy tourist areas on bicycles as a bid to be more approachable as well as environmentally friendly.
