Chiang Mai Muang Police Station has intensified checks on entertainment venues across the city, with officers stressing zero tolerance for drugs, firearms and minors on the premises. A random inspection of 84 staff and tourists turned up no drug use.
The operation falls under the policy of Pol. Lt. Gen. Krittapon Yeesakorn, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Yutthana Kaenchan, Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, who have instructed officers to maintain strict security, prevent and suppress crime and assist the public and tourists, with the aim of building confidence, supporting tourism and strengthening the province’s image.
Pol. Col. Pratya Thisala, Superintendent of Chiang Mai Muang Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Col. Tattawee Danpitaktrakul, Deputy Superintendent for Prevention, led patrol and narcotics suppression officers on inspections and random checks of entertainment venues within their jurisdiction. Operators were instructed to comply with the law and not to take advantage of customers, with particular emphasis on a strict ban on drugs, firearms and the presence of minors.
Officers carried out random drug tests on 84 people, including tourists and venue staff, and found no traces of drugs in anyone tested. The checks are intended to prevent and curb the spread of drugs in entertainment venues and tourist areas.
The operation forms part of a broader proactive campaign by Chiang Mai provincial police, in line with government policy to crack down on drug offences and the illegal possession and use of firearms, and to enforce the law seriously and consistently in order to prevent crime, protect life and property and maintain public order.
The aim, police say, is to build confidence among residents and tourists, reinforce the “Chiang Mai Safe City” campaign and promote the province as a safe, liveable destination for sustainable tourism.
