In spite of their 2,000 baht per head fine last week when 11 people making a living off Tha Pae Road’s pigeons were fined for illegally selling animal feed and charging for photography with pigeons, they have all since returned.
Many people living in the area have complained yet again to authorities that the thousands of pigeons which regularly congregate by Tha Pae Gate are leaving ugly and dangerous droppings on their properties and they fear the spread of disease.
They also say that it is unfair that these vendors are making tax free money by regularly encouraging what they claim are thousands of pigeons to come to the area.
In spite of regular police presence, the vendors appear to congregate to the south of Tha Pae Gate, surreptitiously leaving bird feed which they smuggle in their clothes or motorbike seats.
Once the pigeons come, they rush out to offer to take photos of tourists and to sell them even more feed, upsetting locals who have legitimate businesses in the area.
