Last week, Citylife joined a group of Chiang Mai tour operators and media representatives on a four-day journey through Nan and Phrae, organised in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Nan Office and TAT Phrae Office.
Travelling from Chiang Mai through Nan, Bo Kluea, Sapan and on to Phrae, the trip offered a timely look at what visitors can expect following the recent floods, while also introducing us to the many wonderful experiences both provinces have to offer.
And the good news is that Nan is very much open for business, while neighbouring Phrae is equally ready to welcome travellers.
With floodwaters in Pua and Mueang Nan having receded, the vast majority of attractions, hotels, restaurants and tourism businesses are operating normally. Major roads are open, and local authorities continue to monitor conditions and carry out restoration and safety checks where needed.
But this wasn’t simply a fact-finding mission. Over four days, we were reminded of exactly why Nan and Phrae make such a rewarding northern journey — from misty mountain landscapes and winding roads to distinctive local food, centuries-old culture, beautiful old towns and the warmth of their communities.
We also met local tourism operators in both provinces, exchanging ideas and exploring new ways to connect Nan and Phrae with travellers from Chiang Mai and beyond.
For those who have been wondering whether it’s time to return, the message from our trip was clear: Nan and Phrae are ready to welcome visitors.
With the rainy season painting the mountains and countryside in lush shades of green, this may actually be one of the most beautiful times to go.
