Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital has issued a statement after the body of a one-month-old infant who died there in November 2025 was discovered missing from the hospital mortuary in March 2026 — more than three months after his death.

The premature boy, born at 30 weeks and weighing just over a kilogram, was transferred from Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai on 7th November 2025 following a partial intestinal obstruction. He died the following morning. A post-mortem carried out on 11th November found the cause of death to be acute respiratory distress syndrome; no intestinal perforation or inflammation was found.

The body was kept in the hospital mortuary pending collection by the family. When relatives arrived on 11th March 2026 to request the body for further examination, it was gone.

The hospital has filed a complaint with Phuping Police Station and appointed an internal fact-finding committee. It acknowledges “an error in the body management process” and says an investigation is underway. Pathology samples, photographs and medical records have been preserved and remain available for further examination.
