Ink: Neo Lanna Dance — where the body becomes the brush

Choreographer Ronnarong Khampha and three musicians bring a new interdisciplinary performance to Chiang Mai this July, reinterpreting traditional Lanna dance through movement, music and visual art.

“Ink: Neo Lanna Dance” takes its central concept from a deceptively simple premise — that ink is not merely a mark on a surface but a living movement. Under this idea, the body becomes a brush, leaving traces of breath, pressure and inner emotion that can never be exactly repeated. The work invites audiences to sit with imperfection and ephemerality, exploring how Lanna movement traditions can speak to contemporary experience without abandoning their roots.

Khampha is joined by three musicians who between them span traditional Lanna instruments, contemporary composition and Western strings: Wittaya Polvitoon, co-founder of the Cho Kham ensemble and a leading figure in Lampang’s traditional music scene; cellist Witsarut Tawinno, who came to music via German Studies at Chiang Mai University before going on to study at Payap’s College of Music; and Torpong Samerjai, a Lanna music educator and editor of Percussion Craftsmen: Lanna Wisdom in Instrument Making. The project is supported by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC), and all events are free.
