The commander also issued a direct appeal to the public and tourists regarding dress and behaviour during the festival. He called on all revellers, Thai and foreign alike, to avoid indecent or revealing clothing in public spaces, warning that such dress creates conditions for harassment and public indecency offences. Young people in particular were urged to dress in a manner appropriate to Thai cultural norms. Officers have been instructed to issue warnings on the spot to anyone found in violation.
On the subject of powder-smearing, a traditional element of Songkran celebrations, Kritthapon stressed that it must remain within acceptable limits. Applying powder to a woman’s body — particularly to sensitive areas — without her consent could result in criminal charges of indecency if reported.
The commander also reiterated a ban on alcohol sales in the area surrounding the old city moat, urging vendors to comply in the interest of public order and safety.
