With heavy rains this week, the office says that flash floods, landslides and flooding can and likely will occur across many areas. Heavy rains between the 23rd to the 26th of May is expected. These areas are Chiang Dao, Phrao, Mae Taeng, Mae Ai, Samoeng and Om Koi.
Other areas in the north at risk include every single province in the North of Thailand, especially areas with more than 90mm of rainfall over any 24 hour period which may not have good drainage systems in place.
The governor of Chiang Mai said that he has prepared 20 boats to suction the sand from the Ping River along an 11km stretch from Pa Daed Gate to San Pa Koi bridge, taking the sand into nearby ponds and reservoirs as well as distributing them to further areas. The aim is to dig the Ping River down to 6.30m from its current depth of 4.30metres. Work will be done continuously and around the clock for the next 75 days.
