A large sli tree collapsed across the road up Doi Suthep near Nam Tok Rap Sadet this afternoon (1st September), crushing a parked NT company vehicle. No one was injured.
The tree, over 20 metres tall, blocked all traffic in both directions for nearly an hour. Officials cut it into sections with chainsaws, after which locals and tourists worked together to clear the pieces from the road, reopening the route quickly.
The tree had been standing dead, and recent heavy rain had softened the soil until its roots could no longer hold. No vehicles happened to be passing at the moment it fell. Doi Suthep and Doi Pui villages are now surveying other large trees along the route and in the community to prevent similar incidents.
