The project to upgrade lighting poles along Highway No. 2025 (Atsadathon Road) has come under public criticism due to the design of the poles. Many have commented that the sculptures look outdated, with colors and patterns that are neither modern nor representative of the Lanna identity. Additionally, some of which are installed in the middle of pedestrian walkways.
Following a wave of public concern reported by the media, more than 10 poles were removed within a day. Sompong Monkaew, Director of the Chiang Mai Rural Roads District, visited the site with officials and acknowledged the feedback. He stated that the Chiang Mai Highways Office had taken the public’s opinion seriously. Since the majority of people found the design unattractive and unsuitable, an urgent meeting was held with the inspection committee, and it was agreed that the contractor would revise the design.
Sompong expressed his intention to contribute to the city’s beautification. Regarding the criticized sculpture design, he stated that the department would seek broader public input, either through a public hearing or a sculpture design contest, to ensure the new design reflects the preferences of the community.
